Meet Guillermo Figueredo, owner of Awesome Web Designs, a Toronto web design company. After studying advertising and discovering the world of digital marketing it was evident to Figueredo that web design was home to his passion. With a mission to provide an online presence to businesses that previously didn’t have one he’s able to focus both his passion and creativity. However, like all Whatever The CAIS stories this journey wasn’t paved and clear.
Have you ever moved and found it hard to make new friends? Imagine leaving moving from Spain to Canada leaving everything behind! Immigration comes with its own unique challenges but Figueredo used this as an advantage. He understands that the world changes all the time and so should a business and therefore individuals. Adaptation is key.
Already out of his comfort zone in a new country Figueredo started a new position and began making connections and gaining experience. Those connections coupled with his education and new found passions led him to quit his job and start Awesome Web Designs.
This showed him that being an immigrant wasn’t his biggest obstacle, his biggest obstacle was Guillermo Figueredo.
“The biggest struggle is that you’re your worst judge and it can interfere with getting your first client.”
In the early stages of his business Figueredo found with all his experience and the reputation he had, he still doubted his own abilities. During our interview he recollected saying to himself, “It’s not that good” and asking “am I a fraud” but he quickly put himself in check and reminded himself that he is good enough. These inner thoughts weren’t the only new addition to becoming an entrepreneur. There was also the juggling that comes along with being the boss, and the employees. At a job there’s structure and many moving parts occupied by many positions, however that’s not the case as a start up.
Today after almost two years of business, there’s a small team for Awesome Web designs and Figueredo looks forward to expanding. He’s been able to pave his own path in web design and overcome his largest obstacle ever, his own comfort zones.
MESSAGE TO ASPIRING ENTREPRENEURS
Find something you are passionate about. Something you would like to talk about for hours. I am lucky because I found something that gives me a purpose in life.
Also keep your personal hobbies and business separate because you need to disconnect sometimes. Especially when you work from home. Always separate work from personal.
PERSON OF INSPIRATION
My brother in Spain, Olmo Figueredo, because of his amazing work ethic. He’s a symbol for doing something he loves with his business.
It’s ok to not like, or be an expert on, parts of what you do. For those things outsource or collaborate.
